FAQ: What is the difference between 'PLUG & PLAY', 'DROP IN' and 'HARD WIRED' decoders?
Plug & Play decoders are a small decoder that is ready to be inserted into a locomotive that has a decoder socket installed (indicated by the term 'DCC READY'). Plug and Play decoders come in various sizes, as indicated by pin types (such as 6, 8, 21, etc). These pins will fit a locomotive with the corresponding decoder socket (eg: DCC Ready 8 pin locomotive indicates that an 8 pin type decoder is required when fitting a decoder). These decoders are quick and simple to install, readily available across multiple brands, with no wiring or soldering required.
Drop In decoders are similar in ease and simplicity. These decoders simply replace the existing DC board with a DCC board. Each decoder is unique and made for a range of locomotives, with some featuring pre-fitted LED lights and speakers for sound. Again, these decoders are quick and simply to install, with no wiring or soldering required.
Hard wired decoders are used when a locomotive is not provided with a DCC decoder socket or for those wishing to manually fit their own decoder of choice to a locomotive. These decoders must be soldered directly to the rail pickups and motor terminals, along with any accessories if required (such as lighting or sound). Suitable instructions will be provided with the decoder showing which wires are soldered where, and are recommended for more advanced modellers.
Sound decoders are a decoder with pre-loaded sound files suitable for the locomotive. These come in as either 'PLUG & PLAY', 'DROP IN' or 'HARD WIRED' type. Some sound decoders come pre-wired with a speaker (such as Hornby's TTS decoders), but in most cases, a speaker will need to be added and wired directly to the accessory wire/port of your sound decoder.
